LiFePO₄ stands for lithium iron phosphate. It is a type of lithium-ion battery that uses iron and phosphate as its main cathode materials. Inside the battery, lithium ions move back and forth to store and release electricity. Compared with other lithium batteries, LiFePO₄ is more chemically stable, safer and longer-lasting. It may be slightly larger for the same amount of energy, but its excellent safety and long cycle life make it ideal for industrial machines, forklifts, floor scrubbers, RVs and energy-storage systems.
Inside the battery, lithium ions move back and forth between two sides:
During charging, the lithium ions move to one side and store energy.
When the battery powers a machine, the ions move back and release that energy as electricity.
The battery management system, or BMS, monitors the voltage, temperature and current to keep the battery operating safely.
Think of it like moving water between two tanks: charging moves the water into the storage tank, and using the battery lets it flow back out to produce power.
The main differences are:
Safety: LiFePO₄ batteries are more chemically stable and less likely to overheat or catch fire.
Cycle life: They usually last 3,000–6,000 cycles, compared with approximately 800–2,000 cycles for conventional lithium-ion batteries.
Energy density: Conventional lithium-ion batteries are usually smaller and lighter for the same amount of energy.
Materials: LiFePO₄ uses iron and phosphate, while common lithium-ion batteries often use nickel, manganese and cobalt.
Applications: LiFePO₄ is ideal for forklifts, floor scrubbers, RVs and energy storage. Conventional lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in phones, laptops and electric vehicles.
Lithium iron phosphate has a highly stable crystal structure and strong phosphorus–oxygen bonds. When exposed to high temperatures, overcharging, or physical damage, it is generally less likely than NMC lithium batteries to release oxygen and enter thermal runaway.
